Yecla Wines: the Monastrell grape
The wines of Yecla are those that are made according to the regulations that mark the Designation of Origin of the zone.
This area of Yecla is made up of a total of 7,200 hectares of vineyards covered by the wine company.
This is an area where the cultivation of red varieties of grapes predominates. A predominance that is concrete in the fact that this crop accounts for 95% of the land cultivated in Yecla.
Of them, almost the whole, is occupied by the Monastrell grape variety, that is why we can say that Monastrell grape is the main and typical variety of the area, occupying 85% of the total cultivated area.
Of the remaining percentages, it should be noted that 10% of the cultivated area is occupied by other red varieties. Grapes such as Tempranillo, Garnacha Tintorera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah. Finally it must be said that the remaining 5% vineyards cultivated in the Yecla region are composed of white grape varieties. Grapes such as the following: Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Malvasía.
Characteristics of the Yecla vineyards
Yecla is an area of vineyards cultivated at high altitude above sea level (on average they are between 400 and 800 meters), with limestone soils in which iron abounds as well as other minerals especially interesting for the growth of vines.
Its climate is continental although it has some confluence of the Mediterranean climate, which softens the ends of the thermometer, which are less pressing.
The vineyards of this area are owned by some 1,600 wine growers. Wine professionals who produce about twenty-five million kilos of grape in normal years.
